The Challenge ...

As the mining industry continues to evolve, the need for highly skilled instructors capable of delivering up-to-date, industry-aligned training has become increasingly important. Effective industry trainers must not only have deep subject matter expertise but also the instructional skills to transfer knowledge effectively, engage adult learners, and ensure the workforce is prepared for both current and emerging demands.

The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) recognized that one of its existing instructor development programs needed a refresh to better serve the evolving needs of mining trainers and employers. The original content required updates in both instructional design and delivery methods to ensure that trainers left the program equipped with practical tools, techniques, and confidence to deliver impactful training across a range of mining occupations. MiHR partnered with AligneDesigns to redesign the Industry Trainer program as a comprehensive, skills-based upskilling solution for current and future instructors.

The Process ...

AligneDesigns worked closely with MiHR to redesign and modernize the Industry Trainer program into a robust, four-day instructor development experience. The redesign preserved the valuable technical knowledge already embedded in the original training while enhancing its instructional design to create a more engaging, interactive, and practical experience for participants.

The revised training focused on building both instructional and facilitation skills essential for delivering effective adult learning in technical environments. Participants were guided through best practices in adult education, learner engagement, lesson planning, and skills assessment, while also practicing facilitation techniques through peer teaching and coaching sessions. The program emphasized a strong balance between theory and application, ensuring that trainers could immediately transfer these methods into their real-world classrooms or onsite training environments.

Throughout the four days, learners engaged in a variety of interactive learning strategies, including group discussions, case studies, practical facilitation exercises, and role-play scenarios. The program also incorporated formative feedback and peer evaluations, allowing trainers to build confidence while receiving actionable insights on their delivery techniques.

The Result ...

The redesigned Industry Trainer program now serves as a high-impact upskilling solution for mining sector instructors, preparing them to deliver consistent, engaging, and effective technical training. Participants leave the program with enhanced confidence, improved facilitation skills, and practical strategies that align with the principles of adult learning and meet the evolving expectations of mining employers.

Employers benefit from having better-equipped trainers who can deliver high-quality learning experiences that support safety, operational excellence, and workforce readiness. MiHR’s investment in redesigning this instructor training ensures that the mining sector has a strong pool of trainers who are prepared to meet industry standards and effectively develop the next generation of skilled workers.
